Veins on the back of hands 2006-10-20 Dear Dr. Proskiw: I am a 42 year old woman and have developed very prominent veins on the back of my hands. This has been accompanied by some brown spots that have developed after being out in the sun this past summer. Is there anything I can do to remove these unsightly veins and possibly remove the brown spots? Your complaint is a common one. As we become older, the veins do become more noticeable and prominent with the thinning of skin and loss of subcutaneous fat and tissue on the back of the hands. The brown spots you describe are simply the result of excess sun exposure over the years. The veins on the back of your hands can be treated and removed either surgically or by injection sclerotherapy. The veins are injected with a solution that causes the vein to shrivel up and gradually be absorbed by your body over a few weeks time. Many women do want these veins removed for cosmetic for reasons. There is some swelling of the hand for 7 to 10 days after the treatment and the hand is wrapped with a compression bandage and left in place for a few days. The brown spots on the back of your hands are usually removed using a laser or intense pulsed light device. This destroys the pigment and the treated area peels in 10 to 14 days time. My mother has veins on the back of her hands that are even more prominent than mine, however she has lost a lot of tissue between the bones in her hands and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to fill these defects? Tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Teosyal, Evolence, Revanesse Ultra, collagen or fat can be used to fill in the lost tissue. This gives a nice cosmetic result and high patient satisfaction.
