Treatment option for sun damaged Skin
2007-07-26

Dear Doctor Proskiw: When I was a little girl, I had freckles that were cute but they went away as I grew up. Now that I am older, my face is beginning to show freckle like blemishes and brown spots that aren’t so cute. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?

Answer: As time passes signs of photo aging and sun damage begin to appear on our faces and bodies that detract from our well being and appearance in spite of our overall health. The good news is that these blemishes, which are caused by broken blood vessels or brown spots of pigment caused by sun damage to the skin, can be effectively treated with a new treatment breakthrough called photo rejuvenation.

Question: What is photo rejuvenation and how is it performed?

Answer: Photo rejuvenation is performed using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. This new technology can correct a variety of benign skin conditions such as signs of pigment spots, birthmarks, unsightly blemishes or small veins or other blemishes. The procedure is performed by applying a cold gel to the area to be treated. The smooth glass surface of an IPL hand piece is then gently applied to your skin as pulses of light are applied. Through the application of Intense Pulsed Light, heat energy is applied to the level of collagen beneath the skin surface to eliminate the blemish. The treatments usually last around 20 minutes.

Question: How many treatments are required?

Answer: Depending on the number of blemishes that need to be removed or the severity of the individual problem, a series of between two to six treatments may be recommended. By dividing the full program of treatments into several sessions, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk and does not inhibit your lifestyle with any ‘down time’.

Question: Is IPL only used for facial blemishes?

Answer: IPL technology not only can be used to help create blemish free, smoother looking skin on the face but can also be used effectively on the neck, chest, arms and hands.

Question: Are there other conditions which can be treated with the Photo rejuvenation procedure?

Answer: Yes there are. Many people suffer from broken capillaries which cause them to appear as red streaks or blotches on the face or bright red patches around the cheeks or nose. IPL therapy can successfully treat both these conditions without injuring the surrounding healthy skin.

Question: Are there other treatment options to Photo rejuvenation?

Answer: While there are other laser based treatments available that treat these skin conditions, no other technology provides the long-term improvement of complexion and texture of the IPL Skin Treatments using the Photo rejuvenation program.
