Mesotherapy 2006-01-28
Dear Doctor De Pieri;
I have always been athletic and fitness conscious and even more so since I have moved to the Okanagan Valley. I maintained a healthy lifestyle and watched what I ate. Two years ago I sustained a sports injury which took a year to heal. When it finally healed I went back to my regular exercise routine to lose the weight I gained and get back into shape. However, although I continue to train hard I cannot get rid of the ‘love handles’ which I have developed. Can you help me?
Answer: It is an unfortunate fact that fat, no matter where it is on the body, belongs to the entire body so you can’t train yourself to lose fat in a certain area such as the love handles on the side of your waist. No amount of sit-ups will ‘spot reduce’ this problem area. The good news is that there is a medical treatment called Mesotherapy, which can reduce or eliminate your ‘love handles’.
Mesotherapy is a medical specialty that involves injecting microscopic quantities of vitamins, minerals, pharmaceuticals and amino acids just millimeters under the surface of the skin (mesoderm). Mesotherapy has a variety of applications including weight loss, cellulite reduction and face and neck rejuvenation. In your case a customized formula that prevents cells from storing fat and helps to break down existing fat cells would be used to spot reduce the fat pockets that cause your love handles.
Question: How does Mesotherapy differ from Liposuction?
Answer: The major difference is that mesotherapy, unlike liposuction, is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure. It does not require hospitalization, general anesthesia or downtime. The treated fat deposits are flushed from the body and do not reappear in other areas, which often occurs after liposuction. Mesotherapy is best suited for people who are not excessively overweight but like your case, have problem areas that will not respond to diet and exercise. The downside with mesotherapy is mainly that the results are gradual when compared with the immediate results that liposuction offers.
Question: How many treatments would be required until I see results?
Answer: In cases such as yours results might be seen after three treatments sessions with a maximum of five sessions required for complete results to be realized.
Question: How often can the treatments be performed and how long does the procedure take?
In general, the treatments can be performed once every three weeks. The procedure itself takes 30 minutes or less and requires no recovery time. No heavy bandaging or compression girdles are required.
Question: Will the fat that was removed form the treated areas return?
Answer: Mesotherapy removes the fat from the fat cell without destroying it. This helps your skin regain its natural appearance. If you regain weight after treatment, the fat will most likely return to the treated area. However, a healthy lifestyle incorporating moderate exercise and proper nutrition and diet in addition to mesotherapy has demonstrated good long-term results.
